Update: It's been reported that the Cabinet of NDC government of Ghana has
received a draft of the FOI bill for consideration (16May09)
The Freedom of Information (FOI) bill is required by any nation serious about
growing democracy and promoting accountability of government. FOI bill (law) allows
everyone access to most information held by government just by asking: contracts;
expenditures; hiring; finances; polluted lands; timber concessionaiares; ownership
and custody of resources owned by the people, etc. The NPP government in Ghana
proposed a draft in 2003 and has failed to pass the bill since then.
Many individuals and groups in Ghana are working for passage of the FOI bill in
Ghana by the next government. We think that the political party in Ghana that
provides a comprehensive program, schedule, and other details to institutionalize
this good governance mechanism for democracy and the rule of law will deserve the
support of all Ghana-centered people.
